AN UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE

El Colmenar is a unique rural complex in the lodging and events sector, consisting of three themed, independent country houses united by a common thread: “The world of bees and the mountains.”

With accommodations for over 23 guests, each house offers a distinct experience:

Casa Mundo De Las Abejas: Inspired by the fascinating world of bees and beekeeping.

Casa del Mediterráneo: Reflecting the Mediterranean region where El Colmenar is located, with its sea, beaches, hills, and iconic landscapes.

Casa de las Flores: Inspired by the honey-producing flora that bees forage along the Mediterranean coast, including rosemary, orange blossom, lavender, thyme, acorn, almond, and many more.

The complex features a large terrace with a barbecue, coworking areas, and various lounges and entertainment rooms equipped with everything you need for fun (karaoke, Smart TV…).

In Chóvar, our quaint Mediterranean village, you can enjoy the Olympic swimming pool, sip a mojito or cocktail at the bar, and order traditional paellas or fideuás.

Next to El Colmenar is the village bar, where you can play a game of dominoes or guiñote with the locals—if you dare ;-). There’s also a restaurant offering a wide variety of dishes and menus, a gym, a multipurpose sports court, a conference hall, a playground, the Ajuez reservoir, and numerous hiking trails nearby.

Just 10 minutes away is the Palancia River, and about 25 minutes away are the Regajo Reservoir and the natural waterfall “El Salto de la Novia.” Water activities such as kayaking, snorkeling, and swimming are available.

Only 20 minutes from here, in La Vall d’Uixó, you can visit the San José Caves, home to the longest navigable underground river in Europe.

All this and more awaits visitors in the heart of the Sierra Espadán Natural Park, our spectacular location.

About us

We are a young company that stepped into the rural world just a few years ago. In 2020, after a long lockdown and in the midst of a pandemic, we decided to leave the city of Valencia, where we lived, to move into my ancestors’ village home in Chóvar, a small hamlet in the Alto Palancia region.

Located south of Castellón province and north of Valencia province, here we created a new family and embraced a new way of life—a true rural lifestyle.

We first renovated the house, turning it into a charming rural accommodation for tourists. Soon after, we decided to offer the available spaces, alongside the rooms, for group gatherings and special events of all kinds.

And of course, we proudly offer our flagship product: honey—our honey, produced by our very own bees in the Sierra de Espadán and Irta Natural Parks, deeply Mediterranean in character.

Whether visiting us or trying our honey from afar, you’re supporting beekeeping, helping increase bee populations and contributing to their survival as a species.

And don’t forget to check out our bee-inspired fashion items!

Our
Commitment

We aim to celebrate and give visibility to the rural world through one of its oldest crafts: beekeeping. At the same time, we seek to protect and preserve the honeybee by sharing its incredible gift—honey—with both our visitors and anyone wishing to taste the many diverse varieties our bees produce. By supporting beekeeping, we help increase bee populations and, ultimately, contribute to their survival as a species.

We believe the best way to introduce people to the fascinating world of bees and the charm of rural life is by inviting them to experience it firsthand. That’s why we created COLMENAR, a place where visitors can step into our hive, connect with our village and countryside, and appreciate the products nature provides—honey, in this case. From flowers of cultivated crops, such as almond and orange blossom, to our typical Mediterranean flora, like acorn, thyme, lavender, rosemary, savory, and coriander, our honey captures the essence of the land.

We firmly believe in the value of rural life and the products it yields. Through our honey and our lodging services, we aim to help every visitor reconnect with nature and the countryside, rediscover their roots, and embrace a sense of re-humanization—all together, once again.

A charming place! We really enjoyed it and felt completely relaxed and comfortable.

HISTORY OF
EL COLMENAR

This place holds a rich history. It was built by our ancestors several centuries ago, on large red sandstone arches—a typical substrate of the area and of the entire mountain range that borders the town of Chóvar and its neighboring villages, known as the “Sierra Espadán.” This mountain range is unique in the entire Mediterranean basin due to its lush cork and holm oak forests growing on that soil.

My family, the founders of this house, have always worked the land for their livelihood, and in particular, they were devoted to beekeeping—which is where the name “El Colmenar” comes from, as well as the entire theming of the house, making staying here a truly unique experience.

Beekeeping ran in our blood—or well, it did… until I was born, the creator of this place, alongside my wife and my son.

At the age of two, my father took me for the first time to one of his apiaries in Cervera del Maestre, a town in the north of Castellón province. It was there that I got stung by my first bee. My father was proud of me. I endured the sting like a champion, without any unnecessary drama—just a few tears that lasted only as long as it took for the red mark to disappear, essentially nothing. My family could be happy—I would be the next generation of beekeepers, and the tradition would continue!

At the age of four, I got stung by another bee, for the second time in my short life. But this time, everything was very different. I don’t remember it, of course, but my parents told me that I ended up in the hospital with an anaphylactic shock and another injection—this time of Urbason, a corticosteroid effective against severe allergic reactions. The hopes placed in me as a beekeeper seemed to vanish.

Even so, I’m not someone who gives up at the first setback. Although fate had this planned for me, something inside told me I wouldn’t give up so easily, that bees would continue to play a fundamental role in my life, and that I had to do something about it…

Where we are

El Colmenar is located in the very heart of the Sierra de Espadán Natural Park and enjoys a strategic position, roughly halfway between two major cities: about 50 km north of Valencia (around a 40-minute drive) and approximately 40 km south of Castellón (about 35 minutes by car).

Chóvar is a small village with a population of around 300 residents, offering a peaceful and authentic rural atmosphere.

Chóvar is home to the only cork oak forest along the entire Valencian Mediterranean coast—centuries-old trees that hide magical trails and paths, offering stunning natural beauty and breathtaking views. It’s an ideal spot for photography enthusiasts, hikers, mountain bikers, or anyone looking to connect with nature.
